  For this Classroom Close-Up we were invited to Dunya Sandiha's English Language Arts (ELA) class at Meads Mill Middle School. The students have been reading The Outsiders and in this lesson the students engaged in a Socratic Seminar, which is a question-focused, student-led, and teacher-facilitated discussion.

  On Thursday, June 16, 2022, the community celebrated and honored the retirement of superintendent Mary Kay Gallagher. After a nice reception in Northville High School's cafeteria, the drumline grabbed everyone's attention and helped with the transition period into the auditorium for a sentimental ceremony. The Early Childhood Education and Extended Day Program Coordinator, Chelsea Simons, presented Ms. Gallagher with a fairy garden made specially by the preschoolers. The Northville Board of Education announced a dedication and naming of the "Mary Kay Gallagher Media Center" at Moraine Elementary School.   For this Classroom Close-Up, we visited Ms. Traylor's 6th grade Language and Literature class at Meads Mill Middle School. In their Courage Unit, students are learning about ways to impact their community. They are selling candy canes for their service to action project. With the money, the students plan to buy presents for C.S. Mott Children's Hospital.

• 3:01 Therapy Dogs Launched at ALL SIX Elementary Schools Featured

  Northville Public Schools just launched a Therapy Dog pilot program at all six elementary schools. We will have four certified handlers and their therapy dogs rotate between the schools. Each handler and dog will spend three hours in a building per week. We did send out an opt out form for students who might be afraid or allergic to dogs.

English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are designed to teach a variety of language skills to non-native English speakers (also known as English language learners). Fun Fact: At least *20* different languages are spoken among our students at Northville Public Schools!

  For this Classroom Close-Up we took a look at Erin Grace Johnson's split classroom at Ridge Wood Elementary. Ms. Johnson has a split class of first and second graders. We joined her class during a math lesson where she split the students up by grade and did separate lessons for the students.

The learning style for this classroom is flexible self-paced which means the students are given all the lessons upfront and work on them at their own pace. Students are currently learning about innovations and river valley civilizations.
