English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are designed to teach a variety of language skills to non-native English speakers (also known as English language learners). Mary Kay Gallagher's Retirement Video

On Thursday, June 16, 2022, the community celebrated and honored the retirement of superintendent Mary Kay Gallagher. After a nice reception in Northville High School's cafeteria, the drumline grabbed everyone's attention and helped with the transition period into the auditorium for a sentimental ceremony. The Early Childhood Education and Extended Day Program Coordinator, Chelsea Simons, presented Ms. Gallagher with a fairy garden made specially by the preschoolers. The Northville Board of Education announced a dedication and naming of the "Mary Kay Gallagher Media Center" at Moraine Elementary School. For this Classroom Close-Up we took a look at Erin Grace Johnson's split classroom at Ridge Wood Elementary. Ms. Johnson has a split class of first and second graders. We joined her class during a math lesson where she split the students up by grade and did separate lessons for the students.

The students have been reading The Outsiders and in this lesson the students engaged in a Socratic Seminar, which is a question-focused, student-led, and teacher-facilitated discussion.

The learning style for this classroom is flexible self-paced which means the students are given all the lessons upfront and work on them at their own pace. Students are currently learning about innovations and river valley civilizations.

Full STEAM Ahead

This is the first school year for the STEAM Program. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math. Thanks to the passage of Bond 2017, our elementary schools were able to create new learning environments called Maker Spaces.

Kim Chenoweth is the elementary STEAM teacher. She has been rotating between all of the elementary schools.
You can see the gears turning in these little engineer's heads as they plan, create, and play in this special space, even highlighting a potential career path.
The Northville Education Foundation helped fund a lot of the supplies, 3D printers, robots, and so much more. A true community effort to making this STEAM dream a reality.
