In this Classroom Close-Up, we visit Mr. Joe Taiariol's middle school dual-diagnosed special education class at Cooke School, where students explored the letter "Y" through a hands-on, sensory-rich experience in the vocational kitchen. The day began with students writing and sharing words that start with "Y," followed by an engaging cooking activity where they prepared yogurt parfaits. Students practiced their fine motor skills by chopping fruit and smashing cookies, and used augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices to choose their favorite toppings. It was a delicious way to blend language, life skills, and communication into one fun and meaningful lesson!

The segment highlights the incredible work our students have done over the past several months—designing, building, and testing a high-powered rocket capable of carrying a scientific payload over 3,000 feet into the sky.

The NASA Student Launch Challenge is a prestigious, nine-month-long national competition that tasks middle school, high school, and college students from across the country with tackling real-world aerospace engineering problems. Northville is the only school in Michigan selected to compete this year, joining over 70 teams from across the U.S. at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center for the final launch on Saturday, May 3rd. -

For March is Reading Month, Thornton Creek Elementary embraced the theme of "Teaming up for Reading" and Ms. Wesley's 4th grade class took it to the next level with their creative IditaREAD challenge! Inspired by the legendary Iditarod sled dog race in Alaska, students teamed up and tracked their reading progress along the Iditarod trail. By reading 900 minutes, they mushed their way all the way to Nome! Their reward? A one-of-a-kind outdoor IditaREAD celebration, complete with sled-pulling relays, checkpoint challenges, and tons of teamwork.
