Middle School Math Placement

The goal of middle school math is to scaffold grade level standards for students and to provide challenge through Depth of Knowledge (Webb, 2006). Middle school math allows students to develop their math skills and to build a foundation helping to make them successful in high school math courses. Incoming sixth grade students will have the opportunity to be placed into Math 6, Advanced Math 6, or a subsequent grade level math class. In advanced math courses, teachers will embed above grade level standard when appropriate.

Requirements for Placement into 6th Grade Advanced Math

Students must meet two out of the three NWEA test percentile scores in Math:
- 4th Grade Spring score (80th percentile & above)
- 5th Grade Fall score (80th percentile & above)
- 5th Grade Winter score (80th percentile & above)
- 5th Grade Spring score (80th percentile & above) This score is reviewed during the Appeals Process.
Classroom performance & grades
Sixth grade math placement test score. This test will be given at each elementary school in mid April and will be timed. Test results are emailed to families within three weeks of testing.
Other assessment data will be consulted.

Student data will be reviewed by the Advanced Programming Committee as part of the final placement process.

Procedure for 6th Grade Placement into Higher Level Math Courses

For 6th grade students wishing to be placed into 7th Grade Advanced Math the following must occur:

Students must earn a score of 90% (+2/-2) or higher on the 6th grade placement test. They then must earn a score of 85% (+2/-2) or higher on the 7th grade placement test.
On the occasion that a 6th grade student is extremely math precocious, and earns a 95% (+2/-2) or higher on the 7th grade placement test; and the parent requests, the student can take the 8th grade placement test and must score 85% (+2/-2) or higher for an Algebra I (Advanced Math 8) placement.

Current 6th Grade Students:

If you are currently enrolled and attending Advanced Math 6 during the 2024-25 school year you have the opportunity to apply to test out of Advanced Math 7. Upon earning a qualifying score on the test out, you would be placed in Algebra 1 (Advanced Math 8) for Fall 2025.

Requirements to qualify for testing out
-- 90th percentile or above for spring (5th grade) and fall (6th grade) Math NWEA.
-- All As in math for Q1, Q2, and Q3.

This form is for 6th grade students currently enrolled in Advanced Math 6 who have met the posted criteria above and would like an opportunity to test out of 7th Grade Advanced Math. Your application must be approved in order to attend a test out session. All forms must be submitted by 5/7/2025. There are no exceptions.

New To Northville Students

This form is for students entering 6th, 7th or 8th grade in the fall who are new to Northville Schools, and would like an opportunity to test for placement into Advanced Math class.

Appeals to Office of Instruction

This appeal, made to the Assistant Superintendent of Instruction, must provide substantial evidence that a student will be successful in the higher math tier.
Requests must be received by June 1, 2025 for the 2025-26 school year placements. Upon receipt of the appeal request, the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction will convene a review team, which will be comprised of at least two other educators. The Appeals Committee will meet to review all appeals submitted by the deadline.
Appeals will not be accepted after June 1, 2025. Notification of the decision will be sent to the family within one week of the review team meeting. The decision of the appeal review team is final.
The following can be included in the appeal, which should be submitted to the Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services:

A letter from the family/caregivers clearly detailing their reasoning for desiring advance math placement at the next tier.
A statement from the student detailing his/her reasoning for desiring acceleration.
Demonstration of the student’s aptitude and/or achievement in mathematics.

The following may be included as part of the appeal request:
Examples of the student’s work done through NPS or through an outside entity.
Performance through academic math competitions.
The appeal and the student’s compiled academic record will be reviewed. If deemed necessary by the Assistant Superintendent, a meeting with the family/caregivers will be held to gather additional information.
