Tips for staying healthy during flu season

Dear Parents,

As we approach cold and flu season, we want to share some reminders with you and your family about steps you can take to stay healthy, as an increasing number of flu cases have been confirmed in Michigan and across the country. These tips are from the Center of Disease Control. We also have attached an information sheet from the Oakland County Health Department about the spread of the flu virus.

1. Avoid close contact.

Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.

2. Stay home when you are sick.

If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick, to help prevent others from catching your illness. Northville Public School expects a child will be fever free (without medications) for 24 hours before they return to school. See your student’s School Handbook for additional details, at

3.  Cover your mouth and nose.

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from becoming ill. Teach your child to use their elbow or a tissue instead of their hand to cover coughs and sneezes.

4.  Clean your hands.

Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub. See attached document for detailed hand washing instructions.

5.  Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

6.  Practice other good health habits.

Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

Thank you for helping to keep our school buildings safe and healthy places for our students and staff by practicing these important steps during cold and flu season and throughout the year.

Best of health during this flu season.
