NPS Welcomes New Director of Human Resources: Brian Sumner

Northville Public Schools is thrilled to introduce Brian Sumner as the new Director of Human Resources, officially starting on Monday, May 13. His wealth of experience and knowledge make him a valuable addition to our Central Office Leadership Team.

Sumner's contract was unanimously approved by the Northville Board of Education during its April 23rd, 2024 meeting. He succeeds Abdul Madyun, who left in February for a new opportunity.

Sumner brings with him 28 years of experience in education, having held various positions including Teacher, Assistant Principal, Principal, Associate Superintendent, and Senior Labor Relations Advisor. He began his career at Birmingham Public Schools as an Assistant Principal at Seaholm High School. Later, he worked at Garden City Public Schools as a middle school Principal and then as Associate Superintendent. Most recently, Sumner served as a Senior Labor Relations Advisor for Michigan Medicine.

He holds a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education, both from Wayne State University. Additionally, he is a SHRM-Certified Professional and a Certified Labor Relations Leader through Michigan State University.

Rebecca Pek, Assistant Superintendent of Communications, Development, and Equity, who led the interview process, shared insights from conversations with Sumner’s former colleagues and supervisors: “Brian is a thoughtful and reflective listener who seeks solutions that work for everyone. We are fortunate to have him join Northville Public Schools, and I know he’s excited to return to public education.”

In his own words, Sumner expressed enthusiasm about joining Northville Public Schools: “I’m excited about the opportunity to serve this district, which is known for its excellence. The opportunities offered to students are outstanding, and I look forward to contributing to the district's success by supporting the staff in their efforts to help students grow, learn, and be their best.”

Sumner resides in Westland with his family. He and his wife have three active sons who are involved in music, soccer, and track. In his free time, he enjoys reading, playing sports, and cheering on University of Michigan athletics, as well as all the Detroit teams.

Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Brian Sumner as he embarks on this exciting new journey with Northville Public Schools. His dedication to people and commitment to excellence will undoubtedly make him an invaluable member of our team.
