On Wednesday, April 12th, students at Northville High School were taking the PSAT and SAT - except for the seniors.

"As a result, our seniors are displaced and so one of the things we’ve done is provide this day over the last few years to give seniors an opportunity to choose an experience that they want to use that day as an opportunity to learn," explained Aaron Baughman, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, Northville Public Schools.

This day is called Senior Experience Day.

"And so we give them several opportunities which include a day here at Schoolcraft where they can do a tour, apply and learn from other students. They can go and volunteer at elementary schools, they can create their own service project, they could set up their own college tour, really a myriad of opportunities for them that they are responsible for setting up and applying for and this is just one of those many opportunities," said Baughman.

About 50 students took a tour of Schoolcraft College and about 70 students helped out at our elementary schools.

"So I chose to help out at an elementary school. I just decided to pick it just because as a senior this is my last time in the Northville school system and I thought I’d help give back a little because I’ve been here since Kindergarten and it’s just like really cool to come back and see how things have changed and just help out the teachers a little," said Georgia, 12th grader, Northville High School.

And more than 100 seniors created a service project, like Lily and her friends who volunteered at Gleaners Food Bank in Howell.

"It’s kind of fun to volunteer with friends because you’re not just alone just stacking boxes, it’s fun to do it with other people," explained Lily, 12th grader, Northville High School.

"We want to push our seniors as they get closer to the end of the year to continue thinking about what’s next. And that’s really what we’re trying to do is to push them beyond the boundaries of the classrooms because they’re getting ready to take off and we want them to be able to think about what else is out there in the world whether its service for others, higher learning or giving back to their community," said Baughman.

The Northville Class of 2023 will be graduating on Sunday, June 4th.
