Expanding the Multimedia class at Northville High School
1B Virtual Learning opportunity at Northville High School

These programs will be offered starting next school year 2023/24.

The Office of Curriculum and Instruction outline the 5 new curriculum enhancements that will be implemented starting Fall of 2023.

I'm Sandra Brock from the Office of Instruction and we are so excited here about some impending initiatives that we have involving learning and student opportunities to Northville schools to really grow our practice, so I'm going to be talking some of the changes coming our way that we think are going to be really positive for the students, parents, teachers, and the community at large. We have a robust AP program, Advanced Placement program at Northville High School and with the addition of AP Geography. It's going to be an exciting course, it will be offered next year for students. The proposal was written by our outstanding social studies team at Northville High School and really is going to focus on things such as population growth, migration, the pluses and minuses of those things, role of the environment and implications of climate change, when a River dries up what does a society do, how do they move, where do they move. Students will be analyzing data, looking at satellite images, analyzing charts, so there will be a really big student inquiring piece to the course. We've offered this support class at Meads Mill for about 6 years through our Title I Federal programming and it has really helped students achieve mathematics. So we are now bringing the program to Hillside and will be taking out of General dollars and no longer Title I. And the program is really designed to support those students who maybe a little bit below level with math grade level standards or perhaps even missing some of those Upper Elementary standards which really start to dive into decimals and fractions and some of those difficult math content pieces. So the course will be offered at Hillside. Students will be targeted based on their performance in some of the standardized tests that we provide and once students start performing at grade level, they are able to be exited from that class. So we are really excited to be offering that opportunity at both Middle Schools this upcoming fall. So the peers link gym class is truly a collaboration between teachers and building Administration for our ASD program students. These are students with autism and in the past they've had their own gym classroom, physical education class, taught by a teacher and truly is part of that inclusion movement that we really love to support. We are going to be creating a gym class that has both general education students and students from our ASD classroom. And the whole idea will be to have that peer links approach for the gen-ed students are working with ASD students and helping them to achieve and reach their full potential physically in the gym class. It does look a little bit different than a traditional gym class. We will try to make you know the sound a little bit more manageable that can be intimidating to all kids and so really creating those relationships between our Peer Links kids and our ASD students so that all of them can grow in the realm of physical education. And that will be starting at Hillside this fall also. I'm going to talk a little bit about the the revamping of our multimedia course at Northville High School. Currently juniors and seniors can take the multimedia course but we're going to open it up to 10th graders. Number one because it is such a popular class and number two because the staff is going to be able to really differentiate and grow students who have taken the class more than once and that multimedia aspects. The idea is with multimedia, you're learning about broadcasting and how to effectively communicate whether that's on social media or through a news broadcast and we really hope that as the program builds at Northville High School it can feed into both middle schools, the six elementaries and Cooke and really support their announcements programming which go out daily to students. In Northville High School this fall we are thrilled to be offering a 1B virtual instructional class hour and what that will look like is Northville teachers will be teaching subjects online to students. It will really be a blended approach, so students will not have to be in seat during that time in a classroom at Northville High School. They can learn from the comfort of their own home, they can report to school, they can go to a Panera or Starbucks and truly it's meant to build that student ownership so when students go to college there's a lot of autonomy independence that comes along with that and by offering a 1B virtual block, students are going to have that blended learning approach where they have ownership over their learning and over there time and how they cover the the content of the class. So it's a lot more independent. We're excited to offer this to our students 1B next Fall.
