Classroom Close-Up: Mr. Pak, NHS

In this Classroom Close-Up we tag along with Mr. Pak, Applied Technology Teacher at Northville High School, and his class as they test out their handmade ROVs (remotely operated vehicle) in the pool.

Hey there! Welcome! Come on in. I'm Mr. Pak, I'm an Engineering teacher here at Northville High School and today we're actually outside the classroom, we're going to be at the Northville High School swimming pool and we're working on a project called the SeaPerch projects and this is part of our CAD Engineering course and this is where we kind of apply the design process to a real world problem. Today's problem is kind of looking at a mix of a couple things of the obvious portion is going underwater building little rovs which are remotely operated vehicles and the purpose here is two-fold first off they get some hands-on experience building, working with motors, we do some soldering, do a little bit of electronics work, things like that and then today we're doing some testing. So they're doing their first round of testing going into an obstacle course and so they'll be driving their ROVs through the obstacle courses. This is our last day of testing so they're getting their final trials in and then we're going to be doing kind of a little tournament at the end. So that's where we're at. So usually we have projects where we like design it on paper and then we put it into CAD which is like an automated software and then we either like 3D print things or he provides us with the materials to build something and we just kind of test it and whatever scenario that it is. I think it's great because like today I had two tests and coming to this class afterwards is a really nice relief you know it's definitely fun to be able to do things Hands-On and just not be sitting down and studying for a whole hour.
