Middle School ML Program

Our Multilingual Learner (ML) Program is dedicated to supporting students who are learning English while succeeding in their content classes. We value the rich linguistic and cultural backgrounds our ML students bring to our schools.

ML Class

Students receive direct English Language Development instruction from the ML Teacher. These classes are typically for students whose WIDA proficiency level is 1.0-3.0, although exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis, depending on each student’s needs. Classes meet daily for approximately 48 minutes. Our curriculum is Savvas’ iLitELL, which focuses primarily on rigorous and relevant grade level texts. The ILitELL program has built-in vocabulary development, and provides flexibility and adaptive skills instruction in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students also receive support on assignments for their content classes during ML class time.  Weekly service time for this support is 240 minutes.

ML Co-Taught ELA

Students receive content support within their general education Language & Literature classroom setting from the ML teacher and the ELA (L&L) teacher. This is typically for students whose WIDA proficiency level is 1.0-4.0.  Weekly service time for this support is 240 minutes.

Consultation

Students’ test scores and grades are monitored and recorded, along with consistent communication with teachers. If there is a concern, the student is discussed at an MTSS meeting and additional support can be provided, as needed. This is for students whose WIDA proficiency is 4.0 or higher, or for students who already receive daily support and interventions from other departments.

  • Many students are in both an ML Class and a co-taught ELA for a maximum level of support, with weekly service time of 480 minutes.
  • ML classes focus on English grammar, vocabulary, reading, and writing. Classes also provide test support and content support in Science and Social Studies.
