Middle School Advanced Math Program

Student data will be reviewed by the Advanced Programming Committee as part of the final placement process.

Data Points Considered:

• 6th Grade Math Placement Test Score (aligned to 5th grade standards).
  • This test will be given at each elementary school in April and will be timed.
  • Test results are emailed to families within three weeks of testing.
• Prior NWEA Math scores (within the 80% percentile range).
• i-Ready scores from the current school year.
• Classroom performance relative to math.

For 2025-26

In this transition year from NWEA to i-Ready, we will place more emphasis on NWEA percentile ranges as i-Ready continues to be locally normed.

For incoming 6th grade students wishing to be placed into 7th Grade Advanced Math (Advanced Math 7), the following must occur:

1. Students must earn a score of 90% (± 2) or higher on the 6th grade placement test (aligned to 5th grade standards).
2. They then must earn a score of 85% (± 2) or higher on the 7th grade placement test (aligned to 6th grade standards).

On the occasion that a 6th grade student is extremely math precocious, and earns a 95% (± 2) or higher on the 7th grade placement test, and the parent requests, the student can take the 8th grade placement test and must score 85% (± 2) or higher for an Algebra I (Advanced Math 8) placement.

Movement from an on-level math course to an Advanced Math course may be considered if a student meets all of the following indicators:

• Nationally Normed Assessments: Achieves an 80th percentile or higher on the Spring and Fall administrations of nationally normed benchmark assessments.
• Local Assessments: Earns a score of 95% or higher on local math assessments.
• Classroom Performance: Maintains strong overall performance in the current math class.
• All placement changes from on-level to Advanced Math are managed by the student's math teacher.

Math Summer Testing Form, Grades 6, 7, 8  (Form will become available in the spring)

This form is only for students entering 6th, 7th or 8th grade in the fall who are new to Northville Schools, and would like an opportunity to test for placement into an Advanced Math class. Students are not required to take this placement test. If your student does not participate, they will be placed into the on level math course for their grade.

If you are currently enrolled and attending Advanced Math 6 during the 2025-26 school year, you may have the opportunity to apply to test out of Advanced Math 7 (and into Algebra 1/Advanced Math 8) for the 2026-27 school year.

To be eligible to take the placement test, students must meet all of the following criteria:

• Nationally Normed Assessments: Achieve a 90th percentile or above on the Math diagnostic tests from both:
  • Spring 2025 (5th Grade) (NWEA)
  • Fall 2025 (6th Grade) (i-Ready)
• Math Grades: Earn an "A" on the report card for Math for Quarters 1, 2, and 3 of the current 6th-grade year.

Application Process

• Current 6th-grade students enrolled in Advanced Math 6 who meet the above criteria and wish to apply to test out of 7th Grade Advanced Math must use the form below.
• You must receive application approval before being permitted to attend a test-out session.
• All forms must be submitted by April 17, 2026. This deadline is firm, and no exceptions will be made. (Form will become available in the spring)

Advanced Math 8/Algebra 1 is a course that students receive credit on their High School transcript. If a student is interested in testing out of Algebra 1 or Honors Geometry, they must follow the high school testing out process.
