Elementary ALPS Program

Alternative Learning Program for Students (ALPS)


The Alternative Learning Program for Students (ALPS) is designed to meet the unique educational needs of academically talented students.

  • Grades Served: 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade.
  • Logistics: Students are transported by shuttle bus from their boundary school to another Northville elementary school for the entire school day.
  • Curriculum: Students learn the Northville Board-approved curriculum that meets the Michigan K-12 Standards.
  • Focus: Provides classroom interaction with similar learning peers, employing advanced learning strategies with a focus on application of knowledge.

ALPS Entry & Selection Process for Third Grade

Selection for ALPS is based on a comprehensive review of multiple academic data points.

Current Northville Public School parents will be notified late winter if their 2nd grade student is eligible to attend the on-site assessment. Please see process below if you are new to NPS or your student did not initially qualify.

Data Points

I-Ready results in conjunction with former NWEA scores in
math and english language arts will be reviewed.
Specifically, the 97th percentile, with a 2% flexibility margin.

Mandatory Assessments

Students who meet initial requirements will be invited to
participate in  mandatory on-site assessments. See steps below if your student does not meet the initial requirements.

New to Northville Public Schools?

Families moving in to Northville or in the NPS boundary but currently attending private/charter school, if your student is entering 3, 4, or 5th grade you are invited to complete the following form. All  posted criteria must be met to be considered for entry into the ALPS program.

New to Northville Consideration Form -
Opens February 12, 2026

The Advanced Programming Committee will review all applications to determine whether a student should be offered a screening opportunity. Applications submitted after the deadline will be reviewed only if space remains available.

Appeals Process

When a decision has been made on an application and families would like to appeal that decision.
Deadline: April 24, 2026

This appeal, made to the Assistant Superintendent of Instruction must provide substantial evidence that a student will be successful in ALPS. Upon receipt of the appeal request, the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction will convene a review team which will be comprised of at least two other educators. The review team will meet to review all submitted appeal forms.  Notification of the decision will be sent to the family in email. The decision of the Appeal Review Committee is final.
