Northville Makes History: Two Mustangs Named 2026 MHSAA Scholar-Athletes

A side-by-side composite photo of two Northville High School student-athletes, Amogh Mavatoor and Benjamin Hu. On the left, Amogh is smiling and wearing a dark suit jacket with a light blue dress shirt. On the right, Benjamin is looking directly at the camera, wearing a light-colored, patterned button-down shirt. Both young men are featured in professional headshot style.

In a historic milestone for Northville High School, the MHSAA announced today that two of our very own—Benjamin Hu and Amogh Mavatoor—have been selected as recipients of the prestigious MHSAA Scholar-Athlete Award.

To put the magnitude of this achievement into perspective, this award is one of the most competitive honors in Michigan high school sports. For a single school to have two recipients in the same year is a rare feat that speaks volumes about the caliber of our student-athletes.

Meet Our Award Winners

Benjamin Hu | Swimming & Diving

A powerhouse in the pool, Ben is a five-time All-State swimmer and an MHSAA Finals relay champion. Beyond his athletic speed, Ben is a gifted musician, an AP Scholar with Distinction, and a dedicated swim instructor. He will be heading to the University of Michigan this fall to study Biomedical Engineering.

In his own words:"Sportsmanship is... the unobserved investments in the person next to you when they're at their worst. It's the team coming together to say, ‘Your struggle is our struggle.’"

Amogh Mavatoor | Tennis, Track & Field, Bowling

Amogh’s versatility is unmatched, having earned a No. 4 singles state championship in tennis and two-time All-State recognition. A leader in DECA and several international community service organizations, Amogh is also a National Merit Commended Student. He will join Ben at the University of Michigan, where he plans to study Business Administration.

In his own words:"Sportsmanship isn’t the absence of competition; it’s the way we choose to compete. It’s understanding that the respect you earn matters more than the result you achieve."

Celebrating Excellence

"In my 11 years as an Athletic Director at two different schools, we’ve had only one student-athlete earn this distinction," said Northville's Athletic Director. "To now have two in the same year is truly outstanding."

Northville Athletics will officially recognize Ben and Amogh during this Thursday’s basketball game, with a formal presentation to follow during Honors Night.

Congratulations to Ben and Amogh on representing the Mustangs with such integrity, intellect, and heart!
