Northville and Novi High Schools to Join OAA in 2027

A sports announcement graphic for Northville and Novi High Schools. The top features large, slanted white text with an orange border that reads "JOINING OAA," followed by "Oakland Activities Association" in a stylized outline font. In the center, the Northville Mustang logo (orange and black) and the Novi Wildcat logo (green and white) are displayed side-by-side. Below them, "FALL 2027" is written in large, italicized text with a green-to-white gradient.

In a move that marks a major shift in the Southeast Michigan high school athletic landscape, leadership from Northville and Novi High Schools officially announced today that both districts will join the Oakland Activities Association (OAA) beginning in the Fall of 2027.

The joint announcement, signed by Principals and Athletic Directors from both schools, follows months of "thoughtful discussion" involving student-athletes, coaches, families, and school administration.

A Focus on Stability and Growth

The transition to the OAA is designed to provide long-term stability for both programs. District leaders highlighted the OAA’s well-structured competitive balance model as a primary factor in the decision.

"The OAA provides programming at all three levels—9th grade, Junior Varsity, and Varsity," the statement noted, adding that the conference offers a "broad range of athletic and co-curricular opportunities that support the continued growth and success of our students".

The Final Lap in the KLAA

While the move is confirmed, fans won't see the Mustangs or Wildcats in OAA divisional play immediately. The 2026-2027 school year will serve as the final year of competition within the Kensington Lakes Activities Association (KLAA).

In the announcement, Northville and Novi leadership expressed "gratitude and deep respect" for their current KLAA colleagues, wishing them success as those schools transition to the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Despite the conference change, officials anticipate maintaining non-conference rivalries with former KLAA opponents in the future.

Looking Ahead

By joining the OAA, Northville and Novi will enter a conference widely regarded as one of the premier public school associations in Michigan. Over the coming months, leadership from both districts will work closely with OAA officials to ensure a smooth transition for all sports and activities.
