Celebrating Our Graduates: Inside the "Village" of Cooke School

Cooke School Principal Jennifer Bugar speaking at a podium during the graduation ceremony, wearing a black top, glasses, and a corsage while looking down at her notes.

Graduation Day is a milestone for any school, but at Cooke School in Northville, it holds a uniquely profound meaning. It is a day defined by a beautiful contradiction: it is always the bittersweetest day of the year for families, yet undeniably the favorite day of the year for the staff who make it happen.

For many Cooke students, this ceremony marks the end of a journey that began when they were just toddlers.

“We have had many of our students in our programs many times since they were very young, as they can come to us as early as 2 and a half,” notes Cooke School Principal Jennifer Bugar. “So as they prepare to leave at age 26, that is many years to be in our school community.”

It Takes a Village

To support a student through nearly twenty-four years of growth requires an extraordinary, multi-disciplinary effort. Behind every graduate stands a dedicated "village" of professionals who have worked tirelessly across the years. This massive team includes teachers, paraprofessionals, nurses, and occupational, physical, and speech therapists. The graduation ceremony is a celebration of that collective, unwavering support over the span of each student's tenure.

The Art of the Details (and a Little Flexibility!)

The road to graduation is an all-hands-on-deck effort that completely transforms the school. A dedicated committee comes together to plan every meticulous detail to ensure the day is unforgettable:

  • The Décor: Classrooms create custom posters to decorate the school, and more able-bodied students help transform the gymnasium by setting up chairs.
  • The Party: The music therapist kicks off the ceremony with a song, followed by a full-blown dance featuring a playlist packed with popular tunes and mandatory line dances.

But for all the strict planning, Bugar notes that the staff knows true celebration requires flexibility, and the school proudly embraces the unexpected.

"Each detail is planned, we practice with the students, and then, when the moment comes, we wing whatever is necessary," Bugar says. (In fact, one legendary year even featured a student roller-skating into the gym during Pomp and Circumstance!)

Communicates, Learns, and Works

The heart of Cooke School is embedded in its motto, which focuses on three core pillars: how a student Communicates, Learns, and Works.

During the ceremony, every single teacher does a personalized write-up for their graduate, detailing how they have realized these three pillars and sharing exactly what the school community will miss about them.

The event regularly draws a large crowd of supporters, including directors from the students' resident districts, the School Board, RESA team members, and even retired staff members who return year after year just to cheer on their past students.

Ultimately, Cooke School’s graduation isn't about forcing students to fit into a standard mold—it’s about honoring the incredible, independent young adults they have become. As Jennifer Bugar perfectly summarizes:

"What is most important is that we celebrate each graduate as the unique person who they are–absolutely amazing."
