Health Advisory Board
Northville Public Schools offers instruction in reproductive health, and therefore, is required by law to have a Health Advisory Board. The initial meeting each school year includes a review of HAB procedures, along with an overview of the curriculum review process.
Purpose
- To “establish program goals and objectives for pupil knowledge and skills that are likely to reduce the rates of sex, pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases.” (School Code 380.1507)
- To “review the materials and methods of instruction used and make recommendations to the board of the school district for implementation. The advisory board shall take into consideration the school district’s needs, demographics, and trends, including, but not limited to, teenage pregnancy rates, sexually transmitted disease rates, and incidents of student sexual violence and harassment.” (School Code 380.1507)
- To “at least once every two years, evaluate, measure and report the attainment of program goals and objectives and to make the resulting report available to the parents of the school district.” (School Code 380.1507)
Committee Composition
"At least one half (1/2) of the membership of this board shall be parents who have a child or children attending the district's schools, the majority of whom are not employed by the school district"...and represent all levels, as well as proportionate attitudes and beliefs as expressed in the latest community survey (2006). Additionally, membership shall include:
- The Health Curriculum Facilitator or central office designee
- Teachers and/or building administrators from each level
- Up to two high school students recommended by the principal
- One local clergy
- At least one health professional
- One community agency representative
