Goal. Thornton Creek students will
improve their writing.
Targeted objectives in writing include
increasing authentic writing opportunities,
writing to a prompt as a genre, and developing
metacognition in writing. Through writer’s
workshop, we seek to promote student
perspectives as authors.
Goal. Thornton Creek students will
improve their knowledge and application of
civics.
Through K-5 grade level community and ground
service projects, every Thornton Creek student
participates in the application of civics
twice per year. Civics instruction has been
aligned to maximize scaffolded success in
economic and core democratic values as
students travel through grades. Student
Council has been reorganized to activate a
school-wide, year-long, democratic simulation.
The Michigan Green School process formalized
the community culture of Thornton Creek as
caretakers of our Earth. Fifth grade exit
essays allow students to reflect and write
about the way that their elementary
experiences have equipped them toward
life-long civics advocacy.
Goal. Thornton Creek Elementary will
promote a school culture that supports the
development of the Whole Child.
Current with contemporary research, Thornton
Creek seeks to cultivate learning through a
whole child approach, tapping into the
physical, emotional, and cognitive domains.
Efforts to develop a school culture that
prioritizes and incorporates each daily have
included 10-minute movement breaks, indoor
movement spaces, Mileage Club, Walking
Wednesdays, Fun Runs, water bottle raffles,
Brain Gym, Bucketfiller activities and
recognition, Chess Club, Lego Robotics, and
Book Clubs.
