Why NPS?

Northville Public Schools community, made up of the City of Northville, Northville Township and a portion of Novi, is a suburban community in southeastern Michigan. Located 31 miles west of Detroit and 18 miles northeast of Ann Arbor, Northville is in the heart of the state’s educational, cultural, commercial and medical centers allowing residents access to employment in the nearby metropolitan areas.

 

Northville is a 4-star recognized community by eCities Study, an annual research study conducted by the University of Michigan Dearborn College of Business, recognizing communities with strong growth in business development, while controlling the costs of doing business in town.

 

The city embraces its 150-year old heritage with historic buildings in downtown Northville, neighborhoods that feature 19th Century homes, and unique historical sites.

Beginning with the district’s youngest students in our NAEYC accredited Early Childhood Program, our child-centered curriculum meets the real needs of these early learners, providing them with the freedom to enjoy childhood by putting their physical, emotional and intellectual wellbeing first. Using the Reggio Emilia approach these learners are encouraged to learn and connect with peers through art and play.

 

All six of our elementary schools are setting the bar for strong school improvement processes, tiered intervention and support systems, and in every school are advancing their work in building a culture of learning and leadership through the rigorous process of The Leader in Me. All six of our elementary schools have achieved the prestigious “Lighthouse School” designation in their The Leader in Me journey.

Based on Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, The Leader in Me is an innovative, school-wide model that emphasizes a culture of student empowerment that helps unleash each child’s full potential. Applying the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, teachers and students internalize enduring leadership principles that nurture the skills students need for success in the 21st century.

 

Northville High School, Meads Mill Middle School and Hillside Middle School all offer Project Lead the Way (PLTW) courses. These PLTW courses are authentic hands on opportunities where students are able to specialize in engineering and biomedical science. Beginning in 6th grade every student is exposed to foundational design and modeling courses that allow for students to experience courses like Robotics, Medical Detectives, and Flight and Space in 7th and 8th grade. Once they enter high school, students are able to take their learning to another level in our four year Engineering Design, Civil Engineering and Architecture courses. They are also able to begin a pre-med focus in our Biomedical courses which include Principles of Biomedical Science and Human Body Systems. Whether coding a robot, learning about diagnosing a disease, or designing a computer game, students are learning with their hands and learning real life skills that will carry with them long after their high school career.

 

Northville High School, Hillside Middle School and Meads Mill Middle School are fully authorized by the highly-respected International Baccalaureate (IB) Organization as IB World Schools offering the Middle Years Programme (MYP) for all Northville students in sixth through tenth grade and the Diploma Programme for highly-motivated 11th and 12th graders. The IB Middle Years Programme, which fits hand-in-hand with The Leader in Me initiative at the elementary level, provides a framework of academic challenge that encourages students to embrace and to understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world, by becoming critical and reflective thinkers. International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme emphasizes intellectual, physical, social and emotional growth through all domains of knowledge and prompts students to understand how they learn and to connect and apply that learning. The Diploma Programme is a demanding two-year curriculum that works in an interconnected and cross discipline manner and culminating into final examinations and students that are recognized by leading colleges and universities across the country and around the world.

 

Northville Public Schools is proud to provide a wide continuum of support and services for students.  Part of this continuum is Cooke School that serves severely cognitively (SCI), multiply impaired (SXI) and Dual Diagnosed (DD) students from preschool to age 26 from across western Wayne County who require this level of programming per their IEP.  Our Cooke School staff continues its groundbreaking work with students, forging new pathways for these most challenged learners to have a voice, communicate with those around them, and demonstrate their learning. The Cooke special education program builds on the integration of academic content in ways that also address students’ functional needs, with community-based instruction providing students with opportunities to practice academic and life skills in the actual settings in which they will be expected to apply them.  

 

Teachers and students from across our district are teaching and learning in technology-equipped classrooms that offer flexibility for students to access the tools they need to be successful and a stronger more adaptable tool-set for teachers to address the individual learning needs of students. This proven educational technology adapts to individual student learning styles and strengthens college and career readiness.
