Celestial Spectacle: Solar Eclipse Wows Students While Safety Takes Center Stage

Dr. RJ Webber, you're very proud superintendent of Northville Public Schools and there's something going on Monday that you may have heard about and that is going to be an eclipse and here in the Northville Public Schools, as we are preparing for it, really getting excited for the different activities we're going to do during the day, everything from some kids getting moon pies and SunChips which get it...Moon Pies, SunChips. It's an opportunity really to share with your kids all the different things that could be happening, of course there's some safety issues, so like if you wear glasses the blue light filters yeah, you don't want those, even if you have like nice sunglasses, no, not good enough. So if you're going to actually be out and taking a look at it you really need to be able to find something like these, a pair of these glasses which I genuinely cannot see Ms. Rork or the camera right now, if I look up at the sun I can see that but do not wear these trying to drive or walking around you'll bounce in the walls. As you are likely aware, there will be a Solar Eclipse on Monday (4/8/24) which offers a unique opportunity for our students to witness a celestial wonder. However, it's important to ensure the safety of our students during this event. Therefore, I want to take a moment to highlight some safety measures that we will be implementing and encourage you to reinforce these at home.

It is necessary to emphasize the importance of wearing proper eye protection while observing the eclipse. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can cause serious eye damage or even blindness. If students are viewing the eclipse, they should have glasses that meet ISO 12312-2 safety standards to effectively protect their eyes. These will be provided to elementary students through our PTA’s.

During the eclipse timeframe, elementary students will be in school and our staff will be present to supervise and assist the students. There are some fun learning opportunities that will be incorporated into the school day. Our High School and Middle School students will not be in school during the eclipse and potentially, on their way home. We recommend parents talk to their children about following safety guidelines. Bus drivers will also provide reminders to students about safety measures.

We are committed to ensuring the well-being of our students and are looking forward to making this experience both educational and safe.
